Pesticide Label

Pesticide labels are more than just instructions, they’re legally binding documents designed to protect you, the environment, and everyone around you. Whether you’re a professional applicator or a homeowner tackling pests, understanding these labels is essential for using products safely and effectively.

Pesticide product labels provide important information on how to safely and legally handle and use pesticides. Unlike many product labels, pesticide labels are legally enforceable and all pesticide product labels state: “It is a violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.”

A key function of pesticide product labels is to manage potential risks. In support of that, state and federal agencies enforce pesticide label requirements, educational programs certify pesticide users, and pesticide users must read and follow the label directions.

Label vs. Labeling

The definitions are defined by pesticide law FIFRA Section 2 (p):

Label” is defined as “the written, printed, or graphic matter on, or attached to, the pesticide or device or any of its containers or wrappers."

Labeling” is defined as “all labels and all other written, printed, or graphic matter (a) accompanying the pesticide or device at any time; or (b) to which reference is made on the label or in literature accompanying the pesticide or device, except to current official publications of the EAP, the United States Departments of Agriculture and Interior, and the Department of Health and Human Services, State experiment stations, State agricultural colleges, and other similar Federal or State institutions or agencies authorized by law to conduct research in the field of pesticides.”

Reading the Label

Reading pesticide labels first is important because it helps you:

  • Select the right product for the specific pest or task
  • Protect yourself, children, pets, coworkers, and others from harmful exposure
  • Avoid unnecessary costs by using the correct amount and avoiding misuse
  • And, reduce environmental impact by preventing contamination and overapplication

What Information is Provided on Labels?

Pesticide labels are typically large, detailed documents with a distinct layout that includes:

  • The product name - brand or trademark used to identify the product
  • Ingredient statement – lists the active ingredients, which are the chemicals that kill or control pests, along with the percentage by weight
  • Signal word – indicates the acute toxicity of the product, with options including “CAUTION,” “WARNING,” or “DANGER.”
  • EPA Registration Number
  • Directions for Use
  • Precautionary Statements – identifies risks associated with product use and specifies when personal protective equipment is required
  • Storage and disposal – states how to store and instructions on disposal and reuse of containers
  • First aid treatment – provides immediate steps to take in case of accidental exposure
