Disposable Respirators

Wearing disposable respirators is essential for ensuring protection against airborne hazards, whether you’re working in construction, healthcare, or any other environment that requires respiratory safety. But simply having a respirator isn't enough, properly putting it on and taking it off is key to preventing contamination and maintaining its effectiveness.

Putting on Disposable Respirators

The phrase "putting on" may also be seen as the technical term, donning. Donning means to put on and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as disposable respirators, properly to achieve the intended protection and minimize exposure risks.

There are 3 steps to putting on a disposable respirator, including:

  1. Cup the respirator in your hand. Hold the respirator under your chin with the nose piece up. The top strap goes over and rests at the top back of your head. The bottom strap is positioned around the neck and below the ears
  2. Place your fingertips from both hands at the top of the metal nose clip, if present. Slide fingertips down both sides of the metal strip to mold the nose area to the shape of your nose
  3. Place both hands over the respirator and take a quick breath in and out to check the seal. If you feel a leak when breathing in or out, there is not a proper seal, and you must reseal the respirator (re-do steps 1-3, until there is a proper seal or replace the respirator)

Taking off Disposable Respirators

The phrase "taking off" may also be seen as the technical term, doffing. Doffing means removing PPE in a way that avoid self-contamination.

When taking off a disposable respirator, do no touch the front of the respirator as it may be contaminated. Instead:

  1. Remove the respirator by pulling the bottom strap over the back of the head, followed by the top strap. Do this without touching the respirator
  2. Discard the respirator in a waste container
  3. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water

Importance

Safely putting on and taking off a disposable respirator is crucial for ensuring the equipment provides the protection it is designed for. When a respirator is not properly put on, potential harmful particles can enter into the mouth or nose and increase your risk of exposure. Likewise, removing the respirator incorrectly can lead to contamination.

Proper procedures for putting on and taking off disposable respirators help minimize exposure risks and potential spreading of contaminants to your hands, face, or other environments.

Conclusion

Properly putting on and taking off disposable respirators is an essential part of maintaining your safety and health in environments with airborne hazards. By following the correct steps, you ensure that the respirator performs as intended, providing the maximum protection against harmful particles.

Remember, always handle the respirator carefully to avoid contamination, and make it a habit to check the fit before use.
